Multi-talented entertainer and designer Isaac Mizrahi will make his debut at the New York club 54 Below tomorrow, performing there nightly at 7 p.m. through Saturday, August 13.
According to the club, Mizrahi will perform an eclectic range of music by Billie Eilish, Stephen Sondheim and Milton Nascimento, among others, and “dish on everything happening from social media to sex and what’s happening in these crazy times.”
Mizrahi, who has performed at other clubs in New York as well as at City Winery locations around the United States, is the co-creator and subject of the documentary Unzipped, about the creation of his fall 1994 fashion collection. He has also written three books and a memoir, I.M., published in 2019; served as a judge on “Project Runway: All Stars”; and hosted his own TV talk show.
In a telephone interview last week, Mizrahi said he has been performing since he was a child, “before I made clothes,” eventually performing at “little, tiny clubs that are not there any more. I love it so much, it’s really fun.“
One reason he likes performing in nightclubs, he said, is “that you never know what’s going to happen.”
He said he recently has begun taking questions from his audiences. “It’s really happening in real time. There’s something incredibly funny and inspiring about that, very adult, not for children,” he explained.
Mizrahi said he expected his performances at 54 Below will be both intimate and casual, “because it’s August. There’s something about hot weather in New York City, a sultry, hot night.”
He also said he expected his audiences will “want an opportunity to sit back and enjoy the show, not think about the pandemic, to have an opportunity to be in a room, to be able to eat dinner and drink, really enjoy themselves.”
54 Below recently received a 2022 Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre.
