Islanders ink Ilya Sorokin to eight-year extension, re-sign other veterans

The most important thing the Islanders did at the onset of free agency did not end up being re-signing their 2023 unrestricted free agents, but their highest-profile free agent for next summer.

Ilya Sorokin inked a mammoth eight-year extension the team announced, carrying an annual value of $8.25 million, an industry source told The Post.

The deal will keep the Vezina Trophy finalist in the nets for the Islanders through 2031, the same period as Mathew Barzal and Bo Horvat.

Additionally, the team accomplished its goal of bringing back Scott Mayfield, Pierre Engvall and Semyon Varlamov.

Mayfield and Engvall signed deals for seven years, with Varlamov signing for four years.

According to reports, Engvall’s deal carries an average annual value of $3 million.

General manager Lou Lamoriello said all along that he wanted to bring everyone back, and now that is done.

In Varlamov, the Islanders will continue to have high-level insurance in the event of Sorokin getting hurt, as well as one of the best 1-2 goalie tandems in the league.

Even at 34, Varlamov posted a .913 save percentage last season in 22 starts and as an added bonus, he is close with Sorokin.

And with re-signing Mayfield and Engvall, the Islanders ensure they can go into next season with the same defensive depth chart and top six as they finished last season with.
