The gang’s coming home! Earlier today, FX dropped the trailer for the upcoming sixteenth season of its long running sitcom, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The trailer and synopsis, which promise more laughs than ever, can be viewed below. The new season premieres June 7th.

The Gang™ is ripping straight from the headlines – Inflation, US-Russian relations, mental health, gender equality, injury liability, gun control, and… celebrity-branded products. This year alone, Mac battles with allergies and long-distance dating, Charlie takes on his long-forgotten sisters, Dee fights for rent control and women’s athletics, Frank wrestles for his gun, and Dennis struggles to improve his mental health. At the end of the day, they’re navigating 2023 with 16 years of baggage as a few figures from their past rear their heads.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia stars Rob McElhenney as Mac, Charlie Day as Charlie, Glenn Howerton as Dennis, Kaitlin Olson as Dee, and Danny DeVito as Frank. All members of “The Gang” return for the new upcoming season, along with the return of much beloved side characters! During the show’s fifteenth season, certain side characters such as the Waitress were notably absent. This caused a few fans to be upset. Season sixteen hopes to rectify that, particularly in an upcoming episode which features Dee on a bowling team with certain fan-favorites. McElhenney shared a tweet back in February which teased the upcoming bowling episode, hyping fans for the return of their favorites.

Another notable tease in this trailer is the appearance of a certain duo for a cameo! Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, the stars of the critically acclaimed Breaking Bad, will be crossing into Philadelphia for a special episode! McElhenney teased the appearance of the two in April on his Twitter account, featuring the actors with the Always Sunny cast.

FX

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia premiered on August 4th, 2005 on FX. The series follows “The Gang,” a group of a-hole friends that run an Irish bar in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Each episode involves one exploit, scheme, or con or another involving the gang, whether it’s to exploit the naïve public or each other. There are zero lines in the sand that The Gang is willing to abide by, which gives the show its infamy and praise.

Due to the show’s dark humor, wit, and bombastic performances it’s received critical acclaim and a large cult following. Though due to crass humor and taboo subjects, the series has also had its fair share of criticisms. The show has also been nominated for multiple awards, winning the 2016 People’s Choice Award for Favorite Cable TV Comedy. The series has been releasing a new season per year consistently since its premiere, with extensions between seasons nine and ten, and fourteen and fifteen respectively. This upcoming season will be another extension since season fifteen premiered in 2021 and will be releasing in 2023.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is currently available for streaming on Hulu in the United States, on Disney+ in the UK, and Star Plus in Latin America.
