It’s LGBT+ History Month! Here are the best books, podcasts and TV shows to explore

LGBT+ History Month 2022 is upon us.

Running annually from 1 February to the end of the month, this is a period to reflect on the history of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights, together with remembering the specific gay rights and civil movements.

While Pride Month in June is a time of vibrant celebration for the LGBTQIA+ community and its allies, with parades, parties, events and talks thrown globally, LGBT History Month – first started in 1994 by Rodney Wilson, a Missouri-based teacher – is a time specifically for reflection and education around historic inequalities and oppression. Marking this period is particularly significant this year, after Pride Month faced pandemic-related disruption last summer.

So – for those struggling where to start with their continued education around LGBTQIA+ issues throughout time, as well as connecting with real life issues still facing the communities today, we’re got just the thing: a list of LGBTQIA+ books, podcasts, TV shows and documentaries about the queer community, sexuality, and the ongoing battle against homophobic and transphobic aggression.

We’ve got the new Sex and the City reboot, And Just Like That, which has unexpectedly taken a deep dive into the nuances of queer sexuality and non-binary gender identity. Then there’s Feel Good – the semi-autobiographical romantic-comedy show from comedian Mae Martin.

If you’d like to dip into some reading, we’ve got everything from gripping novels like Laura Kay’s The Split to Jack Guinness’ new essay anthology, The Queer Bible.

Podcast-wise, there’s Homo Sapiens – presented by Alan Cumming and Chris Sweeney – which features a whole sparkling line-up of LGBTIQA+ icons, and the new show from queer author/illustrator Florence Given.

You can also access a useful list of resources on the LGBT+ History Month website, particularly useful for parents or educators looking for an inclusive list of resources for children.

So without further ado, here’s your comprehensive cultural guide for LGBT+ History Month.
