We all have those mornings where things just start out rather haywire and we really wish we could take a martini break. Or a break altogether, followed by a martini. Of course, work (and societal judgements) would normally not allow that.
However, a delicious loophole now exists and I’m very much in support of making this new lifestyle choice. Brooklyn-based New York Distilling Company recently teamed up with Fan-Fan Doughnuts to create a limited-edition Blueberry Martini Doughnut.
This doughnut may sound delicious, but it also has a pretty special history behind it. It was created in tribute to Dorothy Parker on what would have been her 129th birthday. Parker was known for being a poet and satirist, but also a great lover of a good martini.
Appropriately, the Blueberry Martini Doughnut is crafted with both Dorothy Parker American Gin and Dorothy Parker Rose-Petal Infused Gin. But, of course, it is a blueberry martini flavor, so it’s only right that blueberry is at the core of this doughnut. The blueberry is mixed with a bit of lemon and the two gins, and then topped with gin-marinated blueberries. The result sounds boozy, delicious, and quite beautiful.
“I’ve been good friends with Allen Katz and the NYDC team for a long time now, so it was exciting to work with them on this,” said Fany Gerson, who runs the doughnut shop and is a pastry chef and cookbook author, in a statement. “With Dorothy Parker’s birthday on August 22, I knew I had to use both of those gins and make some type of martini. The unique flavor profiles worked really well with berries, so I thought this was a fun take on a classic that I hope everyone will enjoy!”
The limited-edition Blueberry Martini Doughnut is available now through the end of the month at a price of $5 each at Fan-Fan Doughnuts, which is located at 448 Lafayette Avenue in Brooklyn.
“It’s exciting to be able to celebrate Dorothy Parker in such a fun and delicious way,” said New York Distilling Co-Founder Allen Katz, in a statement. “She’s long been an inspiration of ours at the distillery, namely for her pioneering spirit and love of the drink. To be able to work with someone like Fany to create something to toast her legacy with was incredible. Her work is nothing short of artistry in the way she’s able to combine these flavors into something so delightful.”
A breakfast pastry that is also a cocktail? We’re very much onboard. This also opens up all sorts of delicious opportunities for sneaking a bit of booze at our desk while working. Responsibly, of course.
