It’s official: peplum tops are back in (and we’re not that mad about it)

Whether you’re pleased to hear it or not: peplum tops are back. If a shiver just ran down your spine at the mere thought of them, fear not, they’ve had a makeover and are no longer the skin-tight scuba material designs that fashion once knew.

Hark back to a time where peplum tops were the backbone of your wardrobe. Circa 2011, around the same time galaxy-print leggings, statement necklaces and lace-up platform boots were popular, peplum hems were everywhere courtesy of Jil Sander’s colourful spring/summer collection kickstarting their rise in popularity. Before that it was Christian Dior’s hourglass-influenced ‘New Look’ era in the 1940s that spurred the hype of peplums, and now? Everyone from GANNI and Kitri to H&M and River Island have adopted the silhouette once more, but this time its all about a more relaxed approach.

Fashion Week A/W 2023 has already seen a slew of peplum tops on the catwalks (not to mention on the bodies of the stylists/editors/celebs waiting to view them). Richard Quinn and Christopher Kane took to floral embroidered iterations, while London-based Tove favoured a pleated satin design fit for brides seeking a wedding dress alternative.
