It’s time to begin the search for the warmest blankets once more – here are the chicest throws and blankets for winter

Hunting down the warmest blankets for winter is certainly a September-apt task. Beautiful blankets and throws are – without a doubt – one of the easiest ways to inject a touch of luxury into your home. In 2022, a blanket is not just a means of keeping warm, but a soft furnishing to drape over your sofa, transform your bedding, inject colour into your living space and provide comfort during unprecedented times. A blanket is a vibe-setter, a mood-booster and a very worthwhile investment.

With that in mind, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to find the best, softest and coolest blankets (both in style, don’t fret) that you can shop today – from the likes of Made.com, Etsy, John Lewis and Graham and Green. These blankets not only have the power to ensure you’ll look forward to bed time in a way you never have before, but they’ll inject a welcome splash of colour, print or opulent texture into an otherwise nondescript bedroom or lounge.

Buying one of these throw blankets will allow you to update your home without having to pick up a paintbrush – and it requires much less commitment.

The best blankets year-round and the best blankets for winter, as chosen by team GLAMOUR:

Makele Cotton Woven Throw, 130 x 170cm, Multi

If you’re going to buy a new throw to boost your mood, there are a few things to consider. Firstly: the fabric. Do you fancy a wool throw, a mohair throw, a cool and lightweight cotton throw or something fluffy? A pure wool throw (like this £80 design from John Lewis) is luxurious by nature: warm yet totally breathable. Wool-blend throws tend to be a little more inexpensive than their 100% wool counterparts (case in point: this £49 throw from Made.com which blends lambswool with polyamide), while Mohair throws (a soft wool that comes from the hair of the Angora goat) are more expensive that sheep’s-wool throws. The finish is softer and more luxurious – something similar to cashmere. Or you could opt for 100% cashmere, of course. The White Company’s 100% cashmere throw costs £365 and is crafted from precious pure cashmere sourced in Italy.

Next, do you want something lightweight or heavyweight? Heavyweight throws can double up as bedspreads and provide the perfect in-between on warmer nights (Anthropologie does heavyweight throws well), while lightweight throws are great for layering and adding depths in warmer months. Wool and faux fur is heavier, while cotton is lighter.

To avoid shrinkage of all of these throws, and to keep your new blanket’s shape, follow the washing instructions (to the letter) on the label. Some of these woollen throws withstood a gentle machine wash, while others were strictly dry-clean only.
