As Donald Trump’s family gathers at Mar-a-Lago for Tiffany Trump’s lavish wedding this weekend, they’ll be dealing with a “cranky” patriarch, licking his wounds after Republicans’ less-than-stellar performance in the mid-term elections.
Trump’s wife, Melania Trump, four adult children and their partners also represent divided views over helping the polarizing and much-investigated former president run in 2024 so he can return to the White House, according to a report from CNN White House correspondent Kate Bennett.
For her part, Ivanka Trump has no desire to work again for her father as a White House senior adviser. After leaving Washington D.C., she, her husband, Jared Kushner, and three children, ages 6 to 11, moved to Miami.
“(Ivanka) would never go back to that life,” one person close to Ivanka Trump and the Trump family told Bennett. “She knows it’s not something that would serve her or her family at this point.”
Another person told Bennett that Ivanka Trump has been “done” with Washington “since the day she left” in January 2021 and that “hasn’t changed.” A third person pointed out that Ivanka would have hit the campaign trail during the midterms, pushing candidates in various races,if she had any desire to take part in politics again. Yet, as Bennett reported, Trump’s oldest daughter made zero appearances and offered no public endorsements, despite requests for participation by candidates in tight races.
Before Ivanka Trump joined her father’s administration, she had no experience in government, having worked in real estate development for her father’s Trump Organization and running a fashion line. These days, Ivanka Trump’s life appears to be centered around rearing her children and she is often photographed going to the gym or beach. She reportedly has had no direct conversations with her father about her lack of interest in a second White House campaign, but he knows he would have to run without her help, Bennett said.
Trump also knows he won’t have son-in-law Jared Kushner on his campaign team, either, Bennett said. In many ways, Kushner was one of the influential members of Trump’s administration, often seen as “the gatekeeper” to everyone else’s access to the president.
“Jared does not intend to join the campaign and get back involved,” a source familiar with Kushner’s plans told Bennett.
It’s questionable how much Melania Trump wants to be first lady again, Bennett reported. In fact, she seems to like her life of leisure at Mar-a-Lago, which, as Bennett previously reported, involves a daily routine of spa treatments, lunch and dinner with her husband on the patio. “Rinse and repeat. Every day,” a source said in 2021.
“Melania Trump did little in the way of stumping for her husband during his first run for the White House and held only three solo campaign events on his behalf before the 2020 election,” Bennett said.
It’s not surprising that Melania Trump wants as little to do with politics as possible right now, especially because her husband is reportedly angry that she urged him to support Dr. Mehmet Oz in his run for the US Senate in Pennsylvania. The New York Times reported Wednesday that Trump blames Melania for push him to support the TV doctor, whose loss Tuesday was especially damaging to perceptions of Trump’s influence in the GOP.
Other family members, however, are clearly eager to see Trump return to power, including his sons, Don Jr. and Eric, and Don Jr.’s fiancée, Kimberly Guilfoyle, and Eric’s wife, Lara Trump.
Trump Jr. will be “out there campaigning for his dad,” one person told Bennett. In fact, Trump’s oldest son is the closest family adviser the ex-president has right now, with Trump Jr. emerging as a leading figure in the future of Trumpian politics, Bennett said.
Unlike Kushner, Trump Jr. wouldn’t be satisfied with a “behind-the-scenes” role as a campaign manager or as member of his administration role, the source said. “When (Don Jr.) has strong opinions about something involving his father, he does not have a problem saying them out loud,” the source said.
If Trump ran again, it’s likely that both Trump Jr. and Guilfoyle would hit the campaign trail for him, raising money and drumming up enthusiasm among his MAGA base for his return to the White House. That level of support also is expected to come from Eric Trump and, even more so, from Lara Trump, who is a frequent guest on conservative news outlets.
Fortunately for Tiffany Trump, family differences over her father’s future political plans shouldn’t upset her wedding day, even as some pre-wedding events reportedly were canceled as Tropical Storm Nicole swept through Palm Beach and forced Mar-a-Lago to close.
Tiffany Trump marries Michael Boulos, the son of a wealthy businessman who owns several companies in Nigeria, on Saturday . She reportedly had been “flipping out” over fears that he storm would ruin her wedding, which is expected to cost $1 million. The storm is expected to pass by Friday, with Mar-a-Lago slated to reopen at 6 p.m.
The family also is expected to put aside their political squabbles on Saturday, Bennett was told. “It’s going to be a day that is all about Tiffany,” a person familiar with the event said.
