The Miami Heat have made it all the way to the NBA Finals. One of the great underdog stories in sports history, the eighth-seeded Heat have relied on star Jimmy Butler and a host of mostly unheralded breakout players.
One of those players is Caleb Martin. Martin, who spent the early part of his career with the Charlotte Hornets, was nearly out of the NBA after he was waived by the team in 2021.
That was the case until a little bit of help from an unlikely source.
“The chances of me being here without him (J. Cole) making the phone call to Caron would be pretty slim to none.”

Martin says rapper J. Cole put a call into the Heat organization to help Martin land a free agent workout.
“The chances of me being here without him (J. Cole) making the phone call to Caron (Butler) would be pretty slim to none,” Martin said on The Dan LeBatard Show.
In an ESPN article, Butler says he was impressed by J. Cole reaching out to him on behalf of Martin.
“There are certain people that when they call you about particular people, the message and the favor is a little louder than others,” Butler said about the call J. Cole made.
Martin has raised his game in the NBA playoffs, especially in the wake of Tyler Herro’s injury. He put on one of the best performances of his career in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals, coming within one vote of winning the MVP award for that series.
