Jack Grealish’s mum is owed a new handbag after one of his Manchester City team-mates threw up in her old one. Ruben Dias doesn’t usually drink but paid the price during the treble-winning celebrations in June.
City matched Manchester United’s triumph of 1999 by winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League. Grealish certainly made the most of the partying for the week or so that followed.
There was barely a moment where the winger was sober before joining up with England for their Euro 2024 qualifiers. However, not all of the City players enjoyed the merriment in the same way.
Dias doesn’t usually drink but made a slight exception for the momentous occasion. The Mirror claims he had promised his team-mates he would down a couple of shots if they did achieve the treble.
The Portugal star was true to his word and knocked the alcohol back in quick succession. However, it is claimed Dias immediately fell ill and was sick behind a curtain close by.
But Kyle Walker pointed out that Grealish’s mum, Karen, had put her handbag behind the curtain to keep it safe. Dias was said to be mortified and promised he would replace the bag.
A City insider told the Mirror: “Ruben didn’t have too much to drink – because he doesn’t actually drink alcohol. But he had promised the other players that he would down a couple of shots because winning the treble was such a special achievement.
“Unfortunately even that was too much for him to take. He felt unwell anyway because of all the travelling he had done over the weekend – and after drinking the first shot he started to feel a lot worse.
“Ruben didn’t feel any better when Kyle Walker pointed out that Jack’s mum had put her handbag behind the curtain! Now he’s back for pre-season he’s going to buy her a new one.”
City players were said to have made the most of the incident. Dias was furious when Ederson said the defender had over-indulged on alcohol.
Grealish continued to party during his brief summer break between his matches for England and returning for pre-season with City. He played the first half of City’s friendly win over Yokohama F. Marinos in Tokyo on Sunday.
Dias was seemingly also over his embarrassment, coming on at half-time. City were given a scare, conceding three goals in a 5-3 defeat.
