Jack Lisowski has suffered three defeats this season which have been up there with the most painful of his career as he continues his quest for a first title.
Lisowski is in action this week at the WST Classic, looking for the first professional title of his career after coming so close in recent seasons, reaching six ranking finals.
He hasn’t been to a final this campaign, but has been to three semis and a quarter, with three of those losses really stinging afterwards.
Defeats to Mark Allen at the UK Championship and World Grand Prix and a loss to Tom Ford at the German Masters, all of which were in deciding frames, really left a mark, much more so than the 6-0 drubbing against Mark Williams in the Masters semi.
‘Cor, I’ve had some stinkers,’ said Lisowski. ‘Germany, the UK Championships, the Grand Prix. The Masters wasn’t too bad, I just got run over in that, I took that like a man, but the German, UK and Grand Prix, they were tough, really tough.
‘They were probably three of my worst ones ever in terms of how I felt. That’s why it’s been a bizarre season. It could have been really good if I won a few of them, but I didn’t. I’ve been consistently okay but it could have been much better.’
Lisowski is working with former world champion Peter Ebdon who has helped him recover from the hurtful losses, but Jackpot also backs himself to keep coming back for more as he strives for that elusive win.
‘I’m pretty good at picking myself back up but it helps to have him there,’ he said of Ebdon. ‘It’s part of a process, part of life, you win some, lose some. You can’t get too down and can’t get too excited when you’re doing well.
‘I’m working hard, worked hard all season. I had them stinking results but went to the practice table after, never got too down. Hopefully I’ll get my reward some time soon.
‘I do feel closer than ever [to a first title]. I’m starting to really think it. I think that’s why they’ve been so painful because I can see how close I am, whereas I don’t know if I really believed it before, but yes, I think it’s close.’
The 31-year-old will be hoping to get hold of the trophy at the Classic, and wants to get himself into the Tour Championship later this month as well.
He will need at least a run to the quarter-finals in Leicester but he is just focusing on the Classic rather than thoughts of Hull.
‘I don’t know how I’m not in that,’ he said. ‘Them three games, if I won one of them frames I’d be in. But for me to not be in it now, I’ve only got myself to blame. I need a good run.
‘It’s disappointing to be in this position, but I’m not thinking about that, I’m just trying to win this week.’
