During an exclusive chat with PEOPLE, star Jack Quaid reflected on voicing the Man of Steel in My Adventures with Superman and revealed that he “wanted to find my own take” playing the iconic superhero. In My Adventures with Superman, Quaid voices a young, ambitious reporter Clark Kent in the early days of becoming the iconic superhero. While speaking with the outlet, The Boys star admitted that, unlike his character on the Prime Video series, Quaid has always been a big fan of superheroes.
“I was Super J or Super Jack,” he said, noting that as a child, he’d drawn the infamous Superman triangle on a t-shirt and put a “J” inside of it.
Of course, being a self-declared “gigantic superhero nerd” also meant that Quaid was serious about preparing to voice the Man of Steel in the animated series.
Quaid said, “I’ve always loved superheroes, and the fact that I’ve gotten to play in the Superman world, it’s just been an incredible honor.”
Jack Quaid Didn’t Watch Other Portrayals of Superman While Recording the Series Because He Didn’t Want to Unintentionally Copy Someone Else
Still, the Scream actor said that he’d wanted to avoid checking out previous portrayals of the character while recording for the animated series. However, that wasn’t because “they weren’t great,” but instead due to the fact that Quaid didn’t want to unintentionally copy someone else’s version of Superman.
Quaid stated, “I wanted to find my own take. Everyone who’s been Superman has been absolutely wonderful, but this show had such a very specific tone, and I wanted to make sure this version of Superman really fit in this world.”
The Plus One star noted that voicing the Man of Steel pushed Quaid’s acting skills as he had to switch between playing Clark Kent and Superman, two completely different sides of the same character.
Quaid said, “That was really fun, defining which moments to do it and which to let a little bit more Clark shine through. I love navigating the two sides of him, but at his core, keeping him Clark, who’s just this sweet guy who genuinely wants to do good in the world and also wants to be a reporter. I think that he genuinely loves reporting and wants to do the best job that he can.”
The Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse actor added that one of the best things about My Adventures with Superman is watching how Clark and Lois Lane’s relationship changes over the course of the series. Quaid noted that viewing the first seven episodes of the animated show was “really emotional” for the star, especially during scenes with Clark and Lois.
The Star Trek: Lower Decks star wrapped things up by saying, “There’s something so sweet about them, so genuine, and I can’t believe I’m rooting for a cartoon romance to happen. Their romance is a tale as old as time.”
My Adventures with Superman premieres on July 6th on Adult Swim and July 7th on Max.
