An Instagram-famous bodybuilder has been granted bail after a wild brawl with another fitness influencer on a busy street.
Hossein “Yakiboy” Balapour appeared in the NSW Supreme Court on Friday via audiovisual link from jail.
He appeared nervous wearing a green prison tracksuit with his distinctive tattoos peeking out on his neck and hands.
The 33-year-old has been in custody for more than two months after he was arrested over a wild street brawl with fellow bodybuilder Marven Yacoub in Zetland, in Sydney’s inner city.
In the video footage of the incident, Mr Balapour appears to shove Mr Yacoub and throw punches at him while he falls to the ground.
As Mr Yacoub attempts to get away from the blows, the video shows Yakiboy chasing him across the road as they both narrowly avoid moving traffic on the busy street.
The footage then appears to show him hitting Mr Yacoub several times with an object he appeared to pull from his pocket.
The brawling pair were later separated and Mr Yacoub has not been charged with any wrongdoing.
Mr Balapour has been charged with affray, using an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence, and breaching a bail offence.
The court was told the fitness influencer was also charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, recklessly causing grievous bodily harm and intimidation in relation to two further alleged attacks.
He allegedly punched a man at a Persian restaurant when he “became enraged” at a birthday party.
The court was told the 33-year-old allegedly said he would shoot the man, who was picking up his takeaway food.
The martial arts expert is also charged with punching a fan in the face at a music festival and displacing his jaw.
He was on bail for the charges when he was allegedly involved in the street brawl in January.
Justice Richard Weinstein SC noted the allegations included “very significant issues of violence”.
“If these allegations are true, then there’s a significant issue with violence and temper,” he said.
“If one accepts, as I do, that he is abused by rival Iranian groups, then he’s going to have to be able to deal with that without lashing out.”
The Supreme Court justice speculated that steroid use could have played a role in the alleged assaults, a risk he determined to “guard against”.
He noted Mr Balapour would need time to prepare for his three separate court cases, which would likely not be heard before the latter half of the year.
Mr Balapour’s lawyer Rebekah Rodger argued her client also needed to be at liberty to look after his family and start employment as a fitness instructor at a North Sydney gym.
Justice Weinstein granted Mr Balapour’s bail under strict conditions for “the minimisation of risk”.
The court was told the 33-year-old would only be able to leave the house for his new role, medical appointments for himself or family members, court purposes and legal meetings.
He has been prohibited from drinking alcohol or taking any drugs other than those prescribed by a doctor.
The fitness influencer is active on Instagram, Facebook, and the content subscription platform OnlyFans, where he charges $20 a month for access.
