Jake Paul and Eddie Hearn have agreed that a potential rematch between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano will feature three-minute rounds.

The duration of the rounds was a talking point in the lead up to Taylor and Serrano’s undisputed lightweight title fight on Saturday night, in which Taylor went on to win by split decision.

Serrano had challenged Taylor to have their fight to be contested over 12 three-minute rounds, but the rule change wasn’t implemented and the rounds stayed at two-minutes each.

Women’s boxing fights have always featured two-minute rounds but the enromity of Taylor’s clash with Serrano has sparked debate about the duration. Paul said he agreed with Matchroom Boss Hearn that if Taylor and Serrano do fight again, the rounds will be three-minutes each.

“I was sitting next to Eddie during the fight, Paul said. “We were both scoring the fight together as the rounds went on. We both were sitting there and said to each other ‘this needs to be three minute rounds next time’.”

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has been against three-minute rounds in women’s boxing. Sulaiman claims that research carried out by his team states that women are at a greater risk compared to men, but a study from last December conflicts his findings.

Taylor had claimed she didn’t accept Serrano’s offer of three-minutes rounds for financial reasons, but her promoter Hearn insisted the duration of the rounds had no influence on her seven-figure fight purse. Serrano also took home a career-high payday for the clash, which was labelled the “biggest fight in women’s boxing history”.

Serrano, who is managed by Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions, is open to a rematch with Taylor and would like to see three-minute rounds implemented. “It’s up to the team, I’m up for everything. We trained for three minutes, if the money is great again, we’ll do it,” she said.

Calls for a second fight between Taylor and Serrano have already begun, with ‘KT’ stating after her win: A rematch would be absolutely phenomenal, if it wasn’t in Dublin i think we could sell out Croke Park with 90,000 people, absolutely that can happen.

Whilst Paul said of a second fight: “Everyone wants to see a rematch, they came to New York City so if there is a rematch I think it makes sense to go to Ireland.”
