Jake Paul and Tyron Woodley show respect after rematch

Jake Paul’s brutal stoppage over Tyron Woodley has won ESPN Ringside’s ‘Knockout of the Year’ award for 2021.

After more than 68,000 votes were cast, the YouTube star received 56 per cent compared to 37 per cent who chose Tyson Fury’s late stoppage of Deontay Wilder in their epic trilogy fight.

Also among the nominees were Oscar Valdez’s on-the-bell knockout of Miguel Berchelt and Gabe Rosado’s finish against undefeated Bektemir Melikuziev.

Woodley filled in for injured Love Island star Tommy Fury on less than two weeks notice to fight Paul for the second time on December 18.

After an uneventful five rounds, Paul landed a devastating right hand to send Woodley falling face-first to the canvas and score the knockout.

It marked the first time Woodley had been knocked out in over nine years and meant Paul has now stopped all four of his professional opponents.

Paul and Fury traded words before Tommy pulled out of the fight and the YouTube star recently included Tyson on his five-man bucket list of opponents.

And despite Fury’s vowing to “kick him in the balls”, Paul has admitted it’s hard not to like ‘The Gypsy King’.

“It’s entertainment. It just gives me more content, it’s hard not to laugh at the guy, you know,” he told The Herald and The Age.

“Even though he’s talking s*** to me, he’s funny. He’s like a big, giant teddy bear that just has a funny accent and it’s hard not to like him, to be honest.

“We may have our differences, but f*** it. Who cares.”

Fury’s stoppage over Wilder came after both men were knocked down twice in one of the best heavyweight title fights in recent years.

Wilder showed off new parts of his game in the fight by targeting the body of Fury early on, but abandoned the tactic after a few rounds to seek the knockout.

Fury took control from the midpoint and closed the show in the 11th round with a right hook rendering Wilder unconscious.

The Brit has since been ordered to fight WBC mandatory challenger Dillian Whyte, but negotiations have come to a halt after Whyte demanded £10 million for the fight.

Fury’s co-promoter Bob Arum has slammed Whyte for his demands and told him to get his arbitration case with the WBC resolved.

“If he can think he can win and take the WBC title, stop cr****** around with the arbitration and looking to push for the biggest dollar,” he told iFL TV.

“Tyson is the bigger attraction, no-one has heard of Dillian Whyte in the United States really.

“We have offered him a deal with 25 per cent and a guarantee and let him negotiate from that, but again he says he wants eight-figures over ten million which is out of the question.”
