Jake Paul admits Tommy Fury fight cancellation cost him “millions”

Jake Paul will face Tommy Fury on August 6 at Madison Square Garden in a rescheduling of their grudge match.

Paul and Fury were supposed to fight on December 18 at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, but the bout was cancelled when the Love Island star was forced to pull out with a broken rib. Now, they ave been able to come to a deal for a newly-signed date, with the Brit travelling to America for the second time in his professional career.

Fury is the brother of world heavyweight champion Tyson, and the first opponent that Paul will have faced who had a winning record going into their contest. He recently took a step-up in opposition to take on 10-1 Daniel Bocianski and will prove the toughest test of the YouTuber’s mettle thus far.

After a few days of drama surrounding Fury’s terms for the deal, including his family being unable to travel and his insistence on drug testing, Paul confirmed the announcement in a social media post. He shared a fight poster with the caption: “Okay people he grew a set over night. It’s official, Im taking this little Fury’s head off. Amanda Serrano and I dual main-event at the Mecca of boxing.”

Fury added: “The contract has been signed. I don’t need a team to get this job done, now the drug testing has been signed there are no issues. See you at the press conference.”

Paul vs Fury will be promoted by Most Valuable Promotions, and will be broadcast on Showtime Boxing in America, with BT Sport the likely broadcaster in the UK. They will meet next Wednesday for a launch event in New York, with tickets going on sale the same day. Amanda Serrano will also fight in what is being promoted as the dual-main event, as opposed to an undercard bout.

The fight announcement was leaked last month when rival promoter Eddie Hearn claimed that he had knowledge from inside the industry of the bout happening. Hearn doesn’t promote either fighter, but worked closely with Paul on putting together the massive undisputed lightweight title fight between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano in April.

“I don’t represent them, but I hear that fight [Paul vs Fury] is happening August 13, so you might see it,” Hearn told talkSPORT, admitting that he wants to see the American stopped for the first time in his career. “Both are very limited, but as long as it’s a competitive fight, it doesn’t really matter.

“ Jake Paul is a strange one, but I like what he’s doing for boxing. I did Amanda Serrano vs Katie Taylor with him and it was great fun, it was a big success, he’s putting the work in and he’s not terrible. But it will be a pleasant day when someone chins him.”

Fury is favoured with the bookies given his boxing background, but Paul appears to have bulked up in an effort to make use of his clear knockout power. The Brit has stopped as many opponents as his rival, but has yet to land any truly devastating finished against even his weaker opponents.

But he will have to do this one without his brother Tyson, who has reportedly been turned away from travelling to America due to alleged connections with crime boss Daniel Kinahan. He will also have to do it with his dad John at home, who has been banned from travelling to the United States for years due to his criminal record.

Paul, on the other hand, brutalised former UFC champion Tyron Woodley in December when Fury pulled out, as well as landing a gruesome knockout over basketball player Nate Robinson in 2020. Fury has struggled to stop his last few opponents despite dominating proceedings.
