Jake Paul’s coach BJ Flores has been shot during an armed robbery in which a gun was pointed into the side of his head. The 44-year-old former cruiserweight world title contender was in Medellin, Colombia when he was attacked at a set of traffic lights while he was sitting in the passenger’s side of a vehicle.
He took to Instagram to explain the horrifying ordeal, writing: “Tonight I was attacked by 2 armed motorcycle drivers as a passenger at a RED LIGHT.
“They pulled up, stuck a gun to my head, and tried to steal my wallet and my watch. They shot me one time in the leg and I defended myself the best way I could.
“I am still in the emergency room waiting to have the bullet removed at 5:18 am. Thank you for the well wishes . I will learn from this….. Be safe out there please. Life is precious.”
Heavyweight Joseph Parker was among those to send a message of support to Flores, he wrote: “Prayers uso.”
Flores has since posted multiple updates on his Instagram story since the initial post.
It appears the former boxer was enjoying a night out in Medellin before the incident, which has now overshadowed his time in Colombia.
“Quick surgery update, awaiting surgery to remove the bullet. I guess I shoulda went to Cartagena this morning,” Flores said.
He later added: “What’s up guys? First of all, I appreciate all the messages, thank you so much. You can see where the pistol was held right there when they came in the car. The pistol was right there, they were yelling at me to give my wallet, my watch, everything, it was definitely targeted.
“There is just no way they would have seen my watch in the passenger seat.
“It is what it is, I’m still alive, I’m happy, the doctor told me surgery will begin soon then it’s onto the next.”
Flores has been working as a commentator and boxing trainer since retiring from the squad in 2018.
During his career, Flores fought the likes of Tony Bellew and Trevor Bryan, winning 34 of his 39 professional contests.
Paul’s coach recently declared he was shocked to see the way Tommy Fury fought against his man, stating it was a performance that his team did not expect.
He told Fight News: “We had studied Fury and I can tell you that we didn’t see him fight at all like he did versus Jake in his previous fights.
“I give Fury his credit for the way he fought and the game plan. I don’t believe in making excuses. We will go back in training and make the necessary adjustments prior to a rematch.”
Flores would be expected to train YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul for a rematch with Fury, which could take place later this year.
