James Anderson, the 40-year-old veteran England pacer, has turned up for his county side Lancashire in their second match of the County Championship Division One 2023 against Essex.

After Lancashire got bundled out for 207 in the first innings, the right-arm pacer struck in the first over to bring back his team in the match.

Opening the bowling for Lancashire, Anderson struck on the third ball to dismiss Nick Browne for a duck. Later in the 11th over, he also got rid of his former England captain Alastair Cook who was trapped in front of the stumps.

The ball nipped back sharply as the 38-year-old was beaten comprehensively and hit on the pads. Anderson straightaway led a ferocious appeal as the umpire raised his finger. The official Twitter handle of the County Championship has shared a video of the same.

Cook retired from international cricket back in 2018 at the age of 33. He played a total of 161 Test matches and scored 12472 runs at an average of 45.35. However, the southpaw continues to play first-class cricket till date. He has played a total of 339 red-ball matches so far and scored 25851 runs at an average of 46.91.

The Gloucester-born legend has 76 hundreds and 119 fifties to his name in the format.

Anderson, on the other hand has played 179 Test matches and picked 685 wickets at an average of 25.99. He is second after Sachin Tendulkar in terms of most Test matches played by a cricketer. He is third in terms of most Test wickets by a player after Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne.

The Ashes 2023 kicks off from the first Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham from June 16.
