James Gunn Confirms Doom Patrol’s Final Episodes Haven’t Been Shelved

James Gunn wants Doom Patrol fans to know that the show will get its series finale. Earlier this year, Doom Patrol went on a midseason break after debuting six of the 12 overall episodes in Season 4. Soon after, it was reported that Doom Patrol had been canceled, set to end with the current fourth season. While the rest of Season 4 has been filmed, the news of the show getting axed left some fans wondering if the final episodes would also have their release canceled as well. After all, Warner Bros. Discovery completely nixed the release of the big-budget film Batgirl, even though it had finished filming.

Adding to the concerns was the recent worries shared by Michelle Gomez, who plays Madame Rouge on the show. On Instagram, Gomez said she was getting a bad feeling that the final episodes were going to get “binned.” With at least one of the stars in the show have the same worries, this would lead to many fans becoming even more convinced that the end of Doom Patrol really wouldn’t end up seeing the light of day.

“I have a sinking feeling the final installment of Doom Patrol was binned,” Gomez said on Instagram. “If this really is the case then get ready for a huge dump of my own. I mean seriously how can you bin a show with an Oscar winner [Brendan Fraser] and talking butts??”

However, James Gunn is clearing the air about the status of Doom Patrol. Per Home of DCU on Twitter, Gunn said on social media, “I now have confirmation: As I surmised, no, Doom Patrol episodes are absolutely NOT being shelved, even though the premiere date for the next shows hasn’t yet been announced to the public.”

While the final episodes haven’t been shelved, that doesn’t mean that Doom Patrol will continue. As planned, the series is still concluding with these final episodes, having been canceled alongside Titans in January. While it’s a bummer for fans that the show is ending, the finale should be providing a satisfactory conclusion, as it’s been said that the plan all along had been to end the story with Season 4.

“While these will be the final seasons of Titans and Doom Patrol, we are very proud of these series and excited for fans to see their climactic endings,” a Max representative said at the time of the cancelations in a statement. “For Doom Patrol, we celebrate showrunner Jeremy Carver and executive producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns, Chris Dingess and Tamara Becher-Wilkinson. For four seasons, fans have fallen in love with the Titans and Doom Patrol, investing in their trials and tribulations, and in their legendary battles saving the world time and time again.”

The first three and a half seasons of Doom Patrol are streaming on Max. The final episodes don’t yet have a premiere date, but as Gunn says, they are coming, so let’s hope a launch date is announced soon.
