James Gunn is a part of the DCU in a major way, obviously overseeing the next stage of the franchise. However, it seems that he has also become part of the franchise in a more literal sense thanks to a brief appearance of a movie poster for Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed in this summer’s The Flash. Gunn responded to a fan who pointed out that the inclusion of the poster means that the writer-director is now officially exists as canon in the franchise.
The Easter egg was pointed out by a Flash fan site on Twitter, which circled the poster in a screenshot from the movie and noted that “Young Barry has a poster of Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed in The Flash. This means James Gunn is a real person in the DCU because he wrote Scooby-Doo 2. Simply Incredible.”
Gunn’s reply was short and simply said, “I’m canon?”
While the poster will have no real meaning or bearing on the DCU, the stories being told or anything of any importance, that hasn’t stopped fans asking questions like whether this means the Guardians of the Galaxy movies exist in the DCU, with Gunn also writing and directing them, and we can only guess what kind of paradox this creates for the likes of The Suicide Squad. Naturally, we can expect these and other such queries to never be answered in The Flash or any future DCU movie, so that means everyone can go wild and speculate to their heart’s content without ever being proven wrong.
Does The Flash Set Up The Arrival of James Gunn’s DCU?
It is clear that many things about The Flash and December’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom have evolved over time to accommodate the major upheaval of the franchise. The Flash in particular has seen many iterations, including some that didn’t involve the multiverse, others that reportedly set a new major role for Michael Keaton’s Batman and those that tied in with Black Adam’s failed attempt to bring Henry Cavill’s Superman back into the franchise.
What is clear is that The Flash will serve a kind of reset point for the franchise, while not completely changing the whole DCU straight out of the traps. Whether it pays off in the long run is something that will be seen in the coming weeks when the movie finally arrives in cinemas after a long journey from page to screen, via Covid and Erza Miller controversies.
So far, there has been a huge wave of positivity around the movie, with seems to tread the line of fan-service with a fine balancing act. Having already revealed many of its would-be secrets upfront, The Flash is still holding back some things until the movie is released, with screenings including different endings and some reportedly blurring out moments that Warner Bros. would rather not be leaked in the run up to the film’s debut. Whether The Flash can continue to wow once it is in front of a much larger audience, is something we will begin to see in just over a week.
