Former England Rugby International and I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star James Haskell has recalled how his father’s actions mortified him in front of his Wasps teammates at the beginning of his career. The incident happened not long after he had signed to the team, who he played with until 2018. His dad was determined that he make the most of the opportunity but his methods left a lot to be desired for the teenage sports star.
“My dad set up a website without telling me and then obviously had these business cards (made) without telling me,” he recalled speaking to Gabby Logan on The Mid Point podcast.
Assuring her that it was his father’s idea, he told her: “I would never do that… generally, that’s not in my character to do that.
“But I remember… he was quite persuasive as to why he’d done it.
“And I remember telling him that I just… don’t want to do it.

“I remember begging him! Begging him! Please don’t build a website. I don’t want it.”
His father didn’t listen to him however, which led to embarrassing scenes when his teammates found out.
“Obviously soon as all the lads found out, it was awful,” he said.
“I said, ‘Dad, have you lost your mind?’” he remembered.
Despite his protestations, a website put James ahead of the commercial curve as he now admits.
“The honest answer is that… it was meant for commercial sponsors… to add some value to all the noise.
“I’ll never forget Josh Lewsey kind of giving me so much stick for a website.
“And then everybody sort of started their own websites then Josh Lewsey was the last one to get it.
“And I got sponsorship deals off the back of it, and it did make a difference,” he acknowledges.
James, who will appear in a celebrity special of The Weakest Link today, has clearly got over his reticence to self-promote.
Admitting that he’s “grown into that more”, he currently boasts 545,000 Instagram followers.
He uses the platform to keep fans up to date on his life and work.
This includes sharing pictures of his seven-month-old baby daughter Bodhi.
James welcomed the tot with wife Chloe Madeley in August 2022.
The couple have been together since 2014 and married in 2018.
