James May slams Top Gear fans over response to Freddie Flintoff’s crash

Former Top Gear host James May had plenty to say about fans’ vile response to Freddie Flintoff’s crash at the end of last year as they called for him to return to the BBC series.

James revealed: “I’ve noticed this on Twitter, it’s died down a bit now, but for a while there were people saying, ‘Top Gear’s ended because Freddie Flintoff bashed himself up and why don’t you three go back and rescue and save it.’

“I wanted to say to people, ‘Look, the bloke’s hurt himself.'”

He continued: “It’s not an opportunity for you to gloat or say ‘Oh, I prefer the other team.’

“You could possibly just say, ‘Get well Freddie,’ or something nice like that, rather than rejoicing in it. “

James added to Metro.co.uk: “It’s a while since it happened and he’s obviously still not completely better.”

The Grand Tour star is no stranger to crashes himself as he hit a wall at 75mph while filming for the Prime Video series, which took place a few months before Freddie had been injured.

“It’s not like my tunnel crash, a couple of weeks later, I was okay, no lasting damage. That’s obviously something a lot more serious. So good luck to him,” he concluded.

Freddie was airlifted to hospital following a collision at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome during filming for Top Gear in December of last year.

It is believed Freddie was driving an open-topped car when it is thought to have flipped before sliding along the track.

Even though he and the other crew member inside the car were wearing helmets, the lack of roof on the car apparently caused greater injuries.

At the time, the BBC commented: “Crew medics attended the scene immediately. He has been taken to hospital for further treatment and we will confirm more details in due course.”

However, months later it was revealed the former professional cricketer had sustained agonising facial and jaw injuries, as well as a broken rib, during the crash.

While James admitted that, “Dunsfold is a remarkably safe place to drive around, there isn’t really anything to hit and they do take all the safety and stuff very seriously,” Freddie’s crash was “obviously much worse than we first thought”.

Following Freddie’s accident, it was announced in March of this year that filming would not resume on the 34th season of the BBC motoring show.

James, however, returns to viewers screens alongside Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond, for a special high-octane road trip across Eastern Europe in the latest The Grand Tour episodes.

The Grand Tour: Eurocrash is streaming on Prime Video.
