Jamie Carragher believes Jorginho could be a ‘big help’ as Arsenal push for the Premier League title but has questioned if his style of play will work for Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal agreed a £12m deal to sign Jorginho from London rivals Chelsea on transfer deadline day.

Jorginho, who joined Chelsea from Napoli in 2018, has signed an 18-month contract at the Emirates Stadium.

The 31-year-old had entered the final six months of his contract at Stamford Bridge and was set to leave Chelsea in the summer despite winning the Champions League and Europa League in west London.

Mikel Arteta was keen to sign a new midfielder in January and turned his attentions to Jorginho after seeing two bids for Brighton’s Moises Caicedo rejected.

Carragher believes Jorginho could be a ‘really good signing’ for Arsenal but admits he does not share the ‘fast and energetic’ style of play that has taken the Gunners five points clear at the top of the Premier League this season.

‘Arsenal have gone for [Moises] Caicedo, but maybe they cannot get that done from Brighton, so they have gone for Jorginho, who is an interesting one,’ Carragher told Sky Sports.

‘I can totally understand it, but I was listening to people talk about it today, and he is not the sort of style for Arsenal’s play, which is so quick, fast and energetic now and he is the opposite of that and I get that argument.

‘But I also think that with maybe 10 games to go in the season, when they might actually need cool heads, when there is a pressure moment and the nerves are coming on in that title run, he may actually be a really good signing in terms of slowing things down with a cool head.

‘He is a player that has won the Champions League, he has won a European Championship in the last few years, so he is a top player, there is no doubt about that, but he is a different style of player.

‘But I am not saying that is for Arsenal week in, week out forever, but I think that could be a big help for them towards the end of the season when they get nervous.’

Jorginho made more than 200 appearances for Chelsea after being signed by former Blues boss Maurizio Sarri in 2018, lifting the Champions League and Europa League during his time at the club.

The former Napoli midfielder has 46 caps for Italy and was part of the side that beat England to win the European Championships in 2021.

Jorginho becomes Arsenal’s third signing of the January window following Poland defender Jakub Kiwior and Belgium forward Leandro Trossard.
