‘You’re costing your team with those decisions’: Jamie Redknapp slams Cristian Romero’s defending vs Liverpool as ‘diabolical’ – as Robbie Keane admits it ‘felt like it was too easy’ for the Reds as Tottenham go 3-0 down in 15 minutes at Anfield

Jamie Redknapp has slammed Cristian Romero’s defending as ‘diabolical’ during Tottenham’s game against Liverpool at Anfield.

Spurs were blown away by Liverpool after they got off to the worst possible start in Merseyside, conceding three goals within 15 minutes, with all of Curtis Jones, Luiz Diaz and Mohamed Salah getting on the scoresheet early.

It comes after Tottenham were dispatched 6-1 by Newcastle last Sunday, with the Magpies putting five goals past the London club within 21 minutes.

Today, Romero was at fault for conceding a penalty inside 15 minutes, after he brought down Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo inside the penalty area with a clumsy tackle that allowed Salah to score from the penalty spot and extend the home side’s lead to 3-0.

At half-time, former Spurs and Liverpool midfielder, Redknapp, criticised Romero’s challenge, claiming that he had cost his side with what was a ‘poor decision.’

Speaking on Tottenham’s defending running up to the penalty, he said to Sky Sports: ‘[There’s] no pressure on the ball. I’ll get to the ball no one make any tackles, I’ll just stand off it.

‘And then Romero decides to make such a rash, poor decision. I’ve seen some of his defending this past four, five games. Diabolical. Not making right decisions and he actually says ‘I got the ball’.

‘No you didn’t, you got no where near it. And you’re costing your team right now with those decisions. Good piece of play from Gakpo and this is a brave penalty from Mohamed Salah. He just lifts it into the top of the net.’

Liverpool looked very comfortable in the opening stages of the game, with Tottenham’s back five struggling to withstand several attacks from the home side.

Despite mounting a late comeback at the end of the first half, Robbie Keane admitted while the Red’s looked the better side, they should know better than to give Harry Kane opportunities to score, with the England captain converting a close-range volley just before half time.

Meanwhile, Robbie Keane said: ‘It felt like it was too easy for Liverpool at times. And you don’t want to give a team, especially with someone like Harry Kane these opportunities, you know they get a bit of luck here with Van Dijk Slipping.

‘But once it comes to Harry, you know he’s going to score. Liverpool’s given them a bit of life here because the first half an hour you know they were all over the place.

‘At least go into the dressing room now, they’ll be a little more optimistic after scoring. So they need to come out like they did against man united in mid week.
