It was All for You — or rather us — as R&B veteran Janet Jackson opened Budweiser Stage’s latest summer season on Tuesday night to a packed Toronto crowd.

The lakeside shed is about to host a record 70 acts between now and the end of September — returning the outdoor venue to a better than pre-COVID state — including such A-listers and oldie acts as Crowded House, Louis Tomlinson (of One Direction), The Cure, Tears for Fears, Shania Twain, Noel Gallagher, Chris Stapleton, Boy George, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynryd, Sting, and Morgen Wallen to name a few.

Jackson, now 57 years old, looked beautiful in four different costumes — my favourite was an orange pantsuit with plaid bustle – but the low-key production (for her anyway) would go dark every time she changed making for slower-paced interludes.

And while moving well, the heavy lifting was really left to her fantastic male dancers in various states of matching costumes who didn’t miss a beat on such standouts as Got Til It’s Gone (which samples Joni Mitchell’s Big Yellow Taxi), That’s The Way Love Goes, What Have You Done for Me Lately, Nasty, When I Think of You, Control, All For You, Escapade, Scream and Rhythm Nation.

Jackson even planted a kiss on one of the dancers while he was seated at the end of I Get Lonely and asked the crowd to light up their cellphones for Again, bringing tears to her eyes afterwards.

She opened the 40-song, two-hour set with Damita Jo and ended with Together Again but almost every song was shortened so the set list was like one big medley (with Together Again sampled twice earlier).

This year also marks the 30th anniversary of her album, janet., which spawned the likes of That’s the Way Love Goes and that famous black and white topless cover with her then-husband René Elizondo Jr. covering her breasts, shot by photographer Patrick Demarchelier.

Opener Ludacris proved to be a crowd pleaser too, particularly when he brought out Fast and Furious co-star Vin Diesel on stage.
