Janey Godley has said she thought she was “going to die” after she began choking live on stage.

The Scots comedian said her daughter was forced to run to her aid during her show at Glasgow’s SEC Armadillo on Sunday night.

The 62-year-old was taking a sip of water during her Not Dead Yet tour date in the city when she began to choke.

Godley said members of the audience were “horrified” to witness the incident.

She tweeted after the show: “Literally choked on water onstage and thought I was going to die – audience were absolutely horrified and equally worried – I couldn’t breathe and then Ashley Storrie ran on and banged my back and I got back on track so sorry I scared everyone.”

The comedian said her daughter Ashley Storrie then took over the show for a short period of time and improvised in front of the 3000-strong crowd while she got her breath back.

Storrie tweeted: “Mum nearly choked to death on a sip of water, on stage, in front of thousands of people.

“I had to Pat her back, ascertain if she was dying and also take the mic and do funny bits while she learned to breathe again.”

The comedian’s daughter said she “felt like a wreck” following the incident.

In December, Godley warned that her 2023 tour “may be her last” after she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2021.

In January, she told Lorraine Kelly on her STV morning chat show that she wanted to “go out with a bang” on her next tour.

She said: “People keep asking how long I’ve got like I’m a human advent calendar.

“I don’t know how long I’ve got, but I’m going to enjoy it while I can.”

She added: “This is my last big tour I’ll be able to do and the very first date is in Arbroath, and that day I get chemotherapy – so I’m going straight into the tour van and straight on stage.

“I genuinely cannot wait to be able to see people, have a laugh and I’m looking forward to talking about something that’s not my blood count, my haemoglobin or my symptoms of cancer.”
