Jasprit Bumrah returns to lead India in T20I series against Ireland | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Jasprit Bumrah will finally make his return to international cricket after a long injury layoff as the BCCI’s senior selection committee announced the 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Ireland to be played in Dublin.

Bumrah has also been appointed skipper for Team India after the second string team was picked for the Ireland tour.

The three T20Is will take place on August 18, 20 and 23.

The selectors have also included Karnataka pacer Prasidh Krishna in the squad.
The right-arm quick last played for India in an ODI match against Zimbabwe in August last year before undergoing a surgery for stress fracture.
Bumrah underwent a successful back surgery in March, which has kept him out of competitive cricket since a T20I match against Australia in September 2022. Although he briefly returned to action during the Australia T20I series, the injury resurfaced, leading to further setbacks.
Bumrah’s road to recovery has been challenging. He was selected for the ODI series against Sri Lanka in January this year after starting his rehabilitation in November the previous year and resuming bowling in December. However, as his fitness drills intensified in January, he experienced discomfort once again.

Due to his injury, Bumrah was unable to participate in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 and the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2023. The medical staff at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru had initially planned for his return during this year’s Asia Cup, which is scheduled to begin on August 30.
Ruturaj Gaikwad will be the vice-captain of the squad from which many regular members like Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill are absent.
However, after a short time away from the game both Pandya and Gill are expected to return to action through the Asia Cup. Currently, both of them are playing in the ODI series against the West Indies.
This tour to Ireland will also be a good chance for several players in this squad as they are also a part of the Indian team for the Asian Games.
It will also open up another opportunity for Sanju Samson to underline his claim for a more frequent India berth in the white ball formats.
Since many of these cricketers, except Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal, are now being viewed as T20I specialists, the tour to Ireland holds significance for them in their future plans.
The only jarring point in the squad to Ireland is the continued absence of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer.
They are still under rehabilitation after their respective surgeries, and a time-frame has not been set for their return to top-flight cricket.
The BCCI had recently said that both Rahul and Shreyas have started batting at nets at the NCA and they were undergoing strength and fitness drills.
Meanwhile, the World Cup hopefuls will have a week-long training camp at the NCA ahead of their departure to Sri Lanka for the Asia Cup.
Their fitness levels too will be assessed during this camp.
Squad: Jasprit Bumrah (Capt), Ruturaj Gaikwad (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Sanju Samson (wk), Jitesh Sharma (wk), Shivam Dube, W Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed, Ravi Bishnoi, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan
