Jay Shah confirms BCCI set to introduce new policy – not good news for Pathan brothers, Uthappa and more

A meeting on Friday (July 7) has come up with a decision to initiate a rule which will streamline the regulations for an Indian player to play in any overseas franchise leagues.

“We will be coming out with a policy to prevent the trend of pre-determined retirements,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah told reporters.
“Once the policy is decided in a month or so, we will send it back to the Apex Council for approval,” he added.

Currently, Indian players who have retired from international cricket and IPL can join overseas T20 leagues. But a recent surge in those numbers has reportedly bemused the BCCI officials.

Robin Uthappa played in the ILT20 in UAE recently, whereas Suresh Raina was also up for auction in the Sri Lankan Premier League.

The Pathan brothers – both Irfan and Yusuf, Parthiv Patel, S Sreesanth and Stuart Binny will be playing in the Zim Afro T10 league which starts in Zimbabwe soon.

Ambati Rayudu, who retired from IPL at the end of the 2023 season, is also going to be a part of the Major League Cricket in the USA, playing for CSK’s sister team Texas Super Kings.

It looks like the BCCI will soon come up with a guide which will stop players from taking premeditated retirements from the Indian fray in the coming years. The abundance of IPL-based franchises owning foreign T20 league teams is the major reason of this trend and we may see an end to this soon.
