In the modern NBA era, it’s become routine for star players to sit out of games for whatever reason.
Jayson Tatum is not one of them.
During the Elite Youth basketball camp on Tuesday, the Boston Celtics star forward explained why he plays whenever he can.
“I don’t decide … we playing the Hornets tonight, Ima chill. Somebody paid their money to come watch me play,” Tatum said. “I only get to go to Charlotte two times a year. Someone paid their money to come watch me play. Like not trying to be arrogant or anything but there’s a bunch of kids with my shoes and jersey on.
“And just because we’re playing Charlotte on NBA League Pass on Monday and ain’t nobody watching, (I don’t say) alright I’m chilling tonight. That’s not what the great players/the best players do. So competiting in the middle, I love it. That’s basketball.”

It’s great the league has stars like Tatum, who try to play every game if possible. It’s healthy for the game; hopefully, more will follow his mindset.
Tatum, 25, averaged 30.1 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists last season on 47 percent shooting from the field and 35 percent from the field.
