Jeep recalls Wrangler 4xe over potential engine shutdown

Jeep is recalling certain models of its popular Wrangler 4xe hybrid, in addition to issuing a stop-sale order to dealerships in the U.S. According to documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), parent company FCA US is voluntarily recalling almost 63,000 units due to potential engine shutdown because of “a loss of communication” between powertrain modules, says the manufacturer.

The affected vehicles are limited to the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, specifically plug-in hybrids built between 2021 and 2023. In those affected SUVs, Jeep is saying a loss of communication amid diagnostic reactions to specific faults could cause the engine to shut down. A sudden loss of power could increase the risk of an accident.

Owners are expected to be notified by mail in early January 2023, while Jeep says anyone who has paid to get the issue resolved may be eligible for a refund. Jeep put a stop-sale in effect for the new Wrangler 4xe, while vehicles affected by this action may also be eligible for some type of reimbursement allowance.

On December 1, a document provided to NHTSA explains that a remedy for the issue is not currently available, but the root cause is under investigation. According to Autoblog, the fix should be simple: “update the calibration software in the transmission control module, hybrid control processor, and auxiliary hybrid control processor.”

On this side of the border, Transport Canada does not currently have a listing for this Jeep recall, but we’ll update this post if more information becomes available on a Canadian recall for the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4xe.
