Scream VI star Jenna Ortega says the slasher sequel has “very visceral” death scenes courtesy of the new Ghostface.
We’ll soon see Ghostface back on the big screen to carry out another massacre, and franchise star Jenna Ortega says this film will feature a version of the masked killer unlike any other. In each of the Scream movies, different killers are revealed to be under the Ghostface mask by the end of the film, and this means that someone new will be the killer in the upcoming sequel Scream VI. Ortega returns to reprise her role from last year’s Scream as Tara Carpenter, one of a handful of survivors who managed to survive the last Ghostface killer’s massacre.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight while on the SAG Awards red carpet, Ortega offered a tease of what fans can expect from Scream VI. She warns that this Ghostface is more brutal than what Scream fans may be accustomed to, noting that he’s far less “clumsy” than some of the other killers have been. That’s not to say that there won’t be some comedic moments in the new Scream, but it’s warned by Ortega that the new killer will have more of an edge with darker and more “tragic” murders that the killer carries out this time around. From the interview:
“I think Ghostface is a lot more of a scary figure. I feel like we’ve always seen him as kind of a clumsy, funny almost killer. Where I think in this one, he’s actually, a lot of the deaths are very visceral and very, kind of tragic in a sense, which kind of brought in this more dramatic atmosphere. But I still think we do a good job of balancing comedy and stuff like this, but I think audiences should be prepared for it to be a bit more of a roller coaster, more than anything.”
Ghostface Isn’t Playing Around Anymore
There’s no telling who will make it to the end of the movie this time around. Courteney Cox is also reprising her role as Gale Weathers for Scream VI, marking the only classic character from every prior film to return as Neve Campbell has said publicly that she won’t be involved. Returning stars from 2022’s Scream include Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding. Hayden Panettiere is also back to reprise her role from Scream 4. Scream VI is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, with James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick writing the script.
Scream VI will be released in movie theaters on March 10, 2023.
