Only people who lived through the late 90s and early 2000s should get to bring back the era’s most controversial trends. Case in point: Jennifer Lawrence, who just provided the perfect modern take on the drop-waist dress.
On February 24, the 32-year-old actor wore what appears to be the 39th look from Alaïa’s spring 2023 ready-to-wear collection, which features a structured blazer with a ruched waist and floor-length leather skirt. I’m only made more confident by the fact that Lawrence also wore Alaïa’s cabaret pumps, which were featured heavily throughout the collection by creative designer Pieter Mulier.
Unlike the runway model, Jennifer Lawrence kept the blazer’s lapels down, showing off a bit of skin with the braless, plunging look. Her blonde hair was worn in loose waves and Lawrence topped everything off with a pinkish-nude lip and subtle smokey eye.
As low-rise everything makes a comeback in 2023, it was only a matter of time before the proportion-morphing style made its way back into the zeitgeist, and we’ve already seen the elongating look on multiple runways this year.
Anne Hathaway, 40, recently rocked a similar look from Alaïa to the Berlin International Film Festival. However, instead of going for structured shoulders, Hathaway embraced the willowy nature of the silhouette by opting for a black hooded dress with a ruched leather drop waist and visible silver zipper detail. She, too, styled the ensemble with a pair of Alaïa’s whimsical cabaret heels but went for the strappy sandals.
“I think many kinds of styles work when you embrace your inner confidence to pull it off,” stylist Hathaway’s go-to stylist Erin Walsh recently told British Vogue. “Annie is literally glowing. That doesn’t just come from clothes. It comes through stepping into your potential and embracing possibility.”
Walsh continued, “We have so much fun with fashion and aren’t afraid to experiment… It’s about achieving that balance of effortless cool without rules.”
