The 30-year-old is now without a club following a year-long spell at Forest, who narrowly avoided relegation. Lingard joined Steve Cooper’s side after their promotion to the Premier League last year when his contract at Manchester United ran out.
It was initially expected he’d be their showpiece signing of the summer, but the club went on to make more than 20 signings over the course of the window, and Lingard struggled to hold down a place in the team. Lingard only managed two goals and two assists at the club and saw just two minutes of game-time in the last 12 matches of the season. His season was partly hampered after a difficult hamstring injury and subsiquently lost his place in the side.
The Warrington-born midfielder is now looking to kick-start his career with a potential move to MLS on the cards. In a recent clip via his Instagram he was seen practicing at Inter Miami’s training ground.
The former England international made the most of the facilities as he practiced a series of shots at goal. The club is co-owned by fellow former England midfielder David Beckham and is currently undergoing considerable changes which Lingard will surely be eager to be a part of.
Seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi is on path to join the MLS side in the coming weeks after his contract expired with Paris Saint-Germain. Messi will be joined by fellow ex-Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets who recently signed.
The club is also touted to make moves for two other former Barcelona teammates in Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba to join the pair. Lingard has also been heavily linked with a move stateside, but to join ex-Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney.
Rooney, now the manager of DC United, has since decided against the move in a blunt comment. “I don’t know where that has come from,” he said. “From my point of view we have no interest in signing him.” Lingard has since spoken out following his exit from Nottingham Forest. In an interview with Sky Sports he claimed he wanted to keep all options open.
“I’m considering all options,” he said. “I’ve never ruled out any team or club out, so for me it’s just picking the right team and it’s got to be right for me. I just want to play football at the end of the day and that’s all I want to do. Obviously the project has got to be well suited for me, the team’s got to be moving in the right direction but just regular game-time – I’m still hungry.
“Saudi Arabia are doing big things, and in the next couple of years or so, it will be one of the hotspots to go to. I’m not really surprised that the big names are moving out there.”
