With postseason injuries for several key members of the team, the Miami Heat “role players” stepped up in a big way during this year’s Eastern Conference Finals.
After Monday night’s Game 7 win in Boston, Heat superstar Jimmy Butler explained why he doesn’t like to call his guys role players.
“I don’t call them role players, I call them teammates,” he said.” Your role can change on any given day.”

With 20+ point per game scorer Tyler Herro out, undrafted backcourt guys like Gabe Vincent and Max Strus were asked to step up. Both of these players did just that, averaging a combined 25 points per game in this series against the No. 2 seed Celtics.
The greatest “role player” story of the playoffs comes with the emergence of Caleb Martin. The recent addition, who was cut by the Charlotte Hornets earlier this year, averaged 19.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game for the series. He averaged 23.5 points and 12.5 rebounds over the last two games.
Butler has carried his No. 8 seed squad through the postseason, but he certainly wouldn’t be going to the Finals if it weren’t for some help from his teammates.
