Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink singled out Chelsea youngster Lewis Hall for ‘very bad defending’ in the defeat to Manchester United.

United confirmed their place in next season’s Champions League and moved up to third place with a 4-1 victory over the Blues on Thursday night.

Casemiro opened the scoring through Casemiro after six minutes with Chelsea passing up a string of opportunities to draw level. United took control of the game in first-half injury time with Anthony Martial tapping home after a wonderful disguised ball from the Brazilian freed Jadon Sancho, who teed up the Frenchman for a simple finish.

Sancho was picked out unmarked with Hall failing to track the winger’s run into the box with former Blues striker Hasselbaink critical of the 18-year-old full-back.

‘With this goal, it is a brilliant pass to Sancho, looking one way and giving it the other,’ Hasselbaink told Sky Sports. ‘It is very bad defending from Hall but take nothing away from Casemiro for giving it to Sancho.’

Hall was one of Chelsea’s brightest players during last Sunday’s defeat at Manchester City and was a threat early on going forward at Old Trafford, teeing up Mkyhailo Mudryk for what should have been the game’s opening goal.

While impressed with his contributions going forward, Jamie Redknapp insisted the Blues starlet need to improve on his defensive positioning, insisting work with club legend Ashley Cole, currently a member of Frank Lampard’s coaching staff, can offer the guidance he needs.

‘From Lewis Hall’s point of view, I’ve watched the last two games live, he was their best player I thought against Man City, again today going forward I thought he did ever so well,’ he said.

‘But these are the moments you have got to learn from. Right now, the problem for younger players at Chelsea is looking around at those experienced ones and the culture is not quite right, the training is not quite right, the intensity isn’t right.

‘It is important you do your job. Now he has got one of the best left backs we’ve ever seen in Ashley Cole on the staff there.

‘He needs to work on that, look at his defensive positioning, make sure he gets his body shape right because that can’t happen.

‘He did enough good things in these last two games to show he can be a player that can be a left back for the future.

‘He has got to make sure he gets those defensive details right because if not it’s going to be costly for him.’
