The Golden State Warriors revamped their roster by acquiring Chris Paul. JJ Redick questioned how the veteran point guard will fit into the team’s offense.

While the ESPN analyst believes Paul will adapt, Redick identified some discrepancies that could complicate his assimilation with the Warriors.

“Chris is smart enough,” Redick said on The Old Man & The Three. “He’s going to figure out a way to contribute and help them win games, but the contrast in play style is very apparent.”

Redick noted that Paul had the slowest average speed on offense among all players with at least 1,000 minutes last season. Meanwhile, Golden State ran the sixth-quickest offense.

Paul touched the ball at an average length of 5.6 seconds last season, but the Warriors relied on swift ball movement with an NBA-low 2.7 seconds.

Whereas Paul has often utilized on-ball screens, no team has screened less often on the ball than Golden State under head coach Steve Kerr. While Redick isn’t “super negative” on him running a pick-and-roll with Kevon Looney or Draymond Green (if he re-signs), he wishes the Warriors had someone better equipped for a two-man game with Paul.

Though no longer an elite player, Paul averaged 13.9 points and 8.9 assists per game last season. The 38-year-old might need to change his game to thrive in a faster offense led by Stephen Curry.
