Abel Cedillo, injured during Sunday’s fourth race at Del Mar, has a fractured bone in his neck, the Daily Racing Form reported on Monday. Cedillo told DRF that doctors have told him he will not need surgery.
Cedillo, 34, remained hospitalized at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. He will undergo four to six weeks of physical therapy.
“I’ve got a little pain right now,” he told the DRF.
Cedillo was unseated from his mount, Get the Gold, at the start of the race when Silver N Black veered in and clipped heels with Get the Gold, causing the 3-year-old colt to fall at the start of the 1-mile special maiden weight. Cedillo lay motionless on the track until members of the gate crew carried him to the winner’s circle, where medical personnel fitted him with a neck brace and placed him on a stretcher.
Cedillo said he should not have been moved so quickly from the track.
“I think it was a mistake,” he said. “They shouldn’t have touched me. They should have stopped the race.”
