Joe Cole was full of praise for Marcus Rashford after the Manchester United star produced an excellent first half for England against North Macedonia.

Playing at his home club stadium of Old Trafford, Rashford was excellent in the first 45 minutes and was amongst the scorers as England went into the break with a 3-0 lead.

Deployed on the left wing, Rashford caused all manner of problems for the North Macedonia defence with his impressive runs and flair.

Speaking on Channel 4, former England international Cole said: ‘Rashford was outstanding, he missed the Malta game but he was always going to be the one to make the breakthrough. He’s so direct, he was so clever, he was hanging out into different positions they were feeding him the ball, he gave them a torrid time.

‘Look at this for directness, no space I’m still going to take it at you. He can come inside, great balance, puts him in a blender. This was all in the first 20 minutes. When you’re playing against a player with this kind of speed, this kind of agility, you cannot stop him. It was always going to be Rashford that made the difference.’

Rashford enjoyed an excellent season for United, which included him scoring 17 goals in the Premier League.

However, he faces a battle as he looks to re-establish himself in the starting lineup for England.

Jack Grealish, who was part of Manchester City’s treble-winning team, has established himself as England’s first-choice option on the left wing.

Cole stated that Rashford would start if the Euros got underway tomorrow but insisted that a lot can change.

Cole said: ‘I think it’s difficult, Rashford’s had injury problems but at the moment he’s electric. If England were starting their Euros tomorrow of course he’d start but things can change.’

Steven Gerrard described the competition for a starting berth between Grealish and Rashford as ‘a shootout’.

Gerrard said: ‘Grealish is in with a shout, it’s a shootout between those two. Rashford gives you that directness in behind.’
