Joe Hart has issued a two-word response to Aaron Mooy’s retirement from professional football. The 32-year-old midfielder, who played a key role in Celtic’s domestic treble triumph last season, has decided to call time on his career with both the Scottish side and Australia.
Mooy featured in the Champions League group stage last term, and across his 15-year career he turned out for the likes of Brighton, Huddersfield Town, Melbourne City and St Mirren, while also winning 57 caps for his country and playing in a World Cup finals.
On his decision to hang up his boots, the former Manchester City player said: “While it feels really sad to be leaving the game, I just feel the time is right for me. I have been so fortunate to enjoy such a great career across the last 15 years, creating some fantastic memories.
“I am delighted to finish my career on such a high with Celtic and I would like to thank all the fans for the great support they gave me during the past year – I was delighted to be part of such a memorable season.
“I hope Celtic continue to dominate the game and I wish Brendan, the new manager great success with the great group of lads at the club.”
Mooy made 42 appearances for Celtic last season, scoring seven goals and providing seven assists. The club paid tribute to him on social media in a post which said: “Aaron played a crucial role in our recent record-breaking Treble & we wish him the best for the future. Thank you, Aaron Mooy.”
