There was a confusing moment at the start of play at the World Snooker Championship on Thursday morning as Joe Perry walked out into the arena, introduced as his opponent Rob Milkins.
The Gentleman was waiting at the top of the stairs and looked baffled as MC Rob Walker gave the introduction for the Milkman before he wandered down to the table.
‘He’s been a grafter for his entire career and he’ll go for it this morning. He’s a cider drinker, but we call him the Milkman. Robert Milkins,’ announced Walker.
On seeing Perry appear, he corrected himself saying: ‘And as if by magic, it’s the Gentleman, Joe Perry!’
It was a funny moment, but it wasn’t an amusing day for Perry who started the session leading 7-2 but lost the match 10-9 as Milkins roared back.
However, he had no complaints about the mistaken introduction, praising Walker for all the fine work he does at the Crucible.
‘I’m not going to say anything about Rob Walker, he’s absolutely tremendous, he’s probably one of the biggest assets we’ve got at this tournament,’ said Perry.
‘I work alongside him, what he does pre-session every single session is amazing, getting the crowd up.
‘I made about 50 mistakes today, he’s allowed to make one.’
Milkins was ‘chuffed to bits’ with his comeback victory as he sets up a clash with either Shaun Murphy or Si Jiahui in the second round.
He didn’t notice the mistake at the start of the session, though, just saying: ‘I didn’t hear it, I heard about it though, that was quite funny.’
