Joel Glazer ‘took Man Utd talks to boiling point’ before Ten Hag stepped in

Joel Glazer ‘took Man Utd talks to boiling point’ before Ten Hag stepped in

Manchester United co-owner Joel Glazer reportedly left Inter Milan ‘exasperated’ during transfer talks for Andre Onana. The goalkeeper eventually sealed his move to Old Trafford, although manager Erik ten Hag was required to step in and smooth the situation over with tensions simmering.

The Glazers have backed Ten Hag with a healthy summer transfer budget, despite the fact they could soon depart Old Trafford with Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani and Sir Jim Ratcliffe each hoping to purchase a controlling stake in the club.

Part of the cash was destined to be splashed on a new goalkeeper following the departure of long-serving stopper David de Gea as a free agent. Onana turned out to be the chosen one, with Ten Hag pursuing a reunion after working together at Ajax.

But the late stages of a painstaking set of negotiations were almost scuppered by a delay which saw Inter grow increasingly agitated.

According to The Athletic, the £47million move for Onana was agreed last Sunday but it took another 24 hours for Glazer to provide the all-important final sign-off. Confirmation of United’s commitment finally came shortly before midnight on Monday.

With Onana naturally concerned that Inter’s frustration could stop the move in its tracks, Ten Hag is believed to have called up the Cameroonian to reassure him that he was still bound for the Premier League.

“This is the start of a new journey for me, with new team-mates, and new ambitions to fight for. Manchester United has a long history of incredible goalkeepers, and I will now give everything to create my own legacy in the coming years.

“I am excited by the opportunity to work again with Erik ten Hag, and I can’t wait to play my part in the success I know he is determined to deliver at this great football club.”
