It turns out that originally this was meant to be an actor playing Freddie Mercury, who was then swapped for John Deacon.
David Dastmalchian plays the retired musician, who becomes the butt of a joke. When he introduces himself to everyone there, they don’t know who he is, so has to explain he’s the bassist from Queen, who wrote Another One Bites The Dust.
Weird Al then spontaneously performs his parody, Another One Rides the Bus, before Deacon offers him a chance to sing the song during Queen’s set at Live Aid. However, Radcliffe’s title character harshly tells him no.
Speaking with Uproxx, Weird Al himself explained why Freddie was cut and their decision to use the bassist instead.
