John Murtough, Manchester United’s Director of Football, met with the agent of RB Salzburg star Benjamin Sesko last week as the club weigh up a move for the teenager.

The Red Devils have been searching the market for attacking options, with Erik ten Hag keen to bolster his frontline.

The Dutchman had identified United’s attack as an area of concern before Cristiano Ronaldo’s revelation that he wants to leave the club but they could need up to two additions if the 37-year-old is granted his wish of departing.

Sesko, 19, has been on United’s radar for around 18 months but a move had not been in the offing as it was felt he would move to Salburg’s sister club, Leipzig.

But United’s situation has forced the club’s hand and the Manchester Evening News say Murtough met with Sesko’s agent last week to discuss a move to Old Trafford.

Murtough wanted to ascertain whether Sesko would be keen on a move to the Theatre of Dreams at this stage of his career and whether Salzburg would be open to offers.

There is a sense that Salzburg are now trying to drum up interest in Sesko and his winner against Liverpool last week has put him on the radar of a host of top clubs.

Sesko’s contract with Salzburg runs until 2026, putting the side in a strong position when it comes to negotiations.

United attempted to sign Brian Brobbery earlier this summer as back-up to their current attack but he opted to join Ajax instead, where he’ll have a greater guarantee of first-team football.

Antony, the Ajax winger, is keen on a move to Old Trafford but the Dutch giants want around £82m for the Brazilian.

United are not willing to stretch that far, having had a bid of around £51m rejected so far.

Speaking on the Australia leg of United’s tour, Ten Hag said he needs more options in attack to combat the unique nature of the campaign.

‘We signed [Christian] Eriksen for the midfield department, so we are really happy with that,’ Ten Hag said.

‘And yes, I am really happy also with our performances of our midfield department and offensive department at this moment

‘But I also know about this season – we talk about it in Bangkok and Melbourne – it’s a lot of games, the World Cup, so we need more options where you have a good team, and it’s not only about the team, you need a good squad to get the right results at the end of the season.

‘So we have to strengthen the squad even more and we are looking around but we also need the right players.

‘There is a reason in a number of games you need more options in offence, clear. I think it’s vital if you want to get success, the season is really long but we still also have time to fill that in.’
