With the announcement that John Travolta joins Harrison Ford, Halle Berry, Cara Delevingne, Kate Hudson, Pedro Pascal and other stars to present at the 95th Academy Awards Sunday night, Oscars fans have to be wondering if the “Grease” star will delight the world with another “Adele Dazeem” moment.
Travolta delivered one of the biggest goofs in modern Oscars history in 2014 when he came on stage to introduce one of the best original song nominees. The song was “Let It Go,” from the hit animated movie “Frozen.” Its star, Idina Menzel, was set to perform.
But Travolta had some trouble saying her name in his introduction of the “gorgeously empowering” song “Let It Go.” Apparently unable to read the teleprompter. Travolta announced that the performer was a “wickedly talented” person with the name “Adele Dazeem.” People watching from home broke out in laugher, while the audience at the show probably stiffed their laughter or sat confused.
Ever the professional, Menzel didn’t skip a beat over the mispronunciation of her name and belted out the song that would win the Oscar.
At the Oscars the following year, host Neil Patrick Harris and Menzel herself cracked some jokes at Travolta’s expense.
“Benedict Cumberbatch,” Harris said. “it’s not only the most awesome name in show business, it’s also the sound you get when you ask John Travolta to introduce Ben Affleck.”
Menzel called Travolta “Glom Gazingo” when she asked him to come on stage and help her present that year’s best original song award. A smiling Travolta, often a bit of a goofy presence in public, was clearly happy to go along with the joke.
But the “Saturday Night Fever” star was a bit too enthusiastic and generated internet more memes by taking Menzel’s face in his hands, looking closely into her eyes and saying, “My darling, I deserve that, but you my darling, my beautiful, my wickedly beautiful Idina Menzel …”
“You got it!” a clearly uncomfortable Menzel declared while pulling away from Travolta.
Now, in 2023, it will be interesting to see what Travolta’s goofiness brings to the ceremony. If nothing else, audiences will get to seem him in the full glory of his new bald look.
Meanwhile, previously announced Oscars presenters include Riz Ahmed, Elizabeth Banks, Emily Blunt, Jessica Chastain, Glenn Close, Jennifer Connelly, Ariana DeBose, Andrew Garfield, Hugh Grant, Danai Gurira, Salma Hayek Pinault, Samuel L.
