Director Chad Stahelski has revealed that he is now working on a director’s cut of recent action movie hit, John Wick: Chapter 4. Speaking with Comicbookmovie.com, the former stuntman-turned-filmmaker revealed that the longer cut of John Wick: Chapter 4 (which already clocks in at 2 hours and 49 minutes) will eventually be released, adding around 15 minutes to the runtime and even more characters.
“Yeah, I’ve been working on the Director’s Cut, the extended cut, which we’ve almost finished. There’s about another, I think, 10 to 15 minutes we put back in. We cut out a big chunk of Berlin, a whole character called The Frau, which is a pretty funny scene with John, and another scene between him and Tracker, a few other little action beats that we put back in.”
Of course, movies often end up with material left on the cutting room floor, with Stahelski explaining why some of these scenes were removed from the theatrical release.
“I mean, yeah, there’s always stuff we take out because it doesn’t fit the pacing. I think the stuff is all super quality, I love the choreo, I love the characters. It just didn’t – as a whole, it changed the pace of the film, and I didn’t think I could get, you know, two hour and 38 minute film in there if it felt slow. I think we got away with it because it felt driven, it felt like it was very purposeful, and I didn’t want to upset that pace. And, if it has to go, it has to go.”
Despite this, these scenes and characters will be added back into the fray for this John Wick: Chapter 4 director’s cut. Which, frankly, is great news. Can you ever really have too much John Wick?
Will John Wick Return in John Wick: Chapter 5?
Directed by Chad Stahelski and starring Keanu Reeves, Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Laurence Fishburne, Hiroyuki Sanada, Shamier Anderson, Lance Reddick, Rina Sawayama, Scott Adkins, and Ian McShane, John Wick: Chapter 4 finds the titular assassin uncovering a path to defeating the High Table, but before he can earn his freedom, Wick must face off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe and forces that turn old friends into new foes.
While John Wick: Chapter 4 acts as an ending to the franchise, the sequel has since gone on to become the highest grossing installment in the John Wick saga, with the studio now wondering whether they can bring Stahelski and Keanu Reeves back for John Wick: Chapter 5. “There’s a will and there’s an openness. And you could certainly interpret that ending in different ways,” Stahelski said recently. “We’re all going to take a tiny rest here and then scratch at ideas about whether there’s a credible way to get into five. But there’s no guarantee.”
For now, spinoffs are on the way, with Reeves set to reprise the role in the upcoming Ballerina. Taking place between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4, Ballerina follows Ana de Armas as an assassin who hunts down the murderers of her family.
John Wick: Chapter 4 is available now on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray.
