While the future of Keanu Reeves in the John Wick franchise isn’t entirely clear, there are other characters in that world who can keep the series going with their own standalone films. The franchise is already set to expand with the feature film Ballerina, introducing Ana de Armas as the newest assassin of the movie series. There’s also a prequel show in the works at Peacock, dubbed The Continental, which goes decades into the past before the events of the John Wick movies.
Ballerina and The Continental could just be the beginning of an expansive John Wick universe. While speaking about the franchise on The Joe Rogan Experience (per ScreenRant), director Chad Stahelski, who has helmed all four John Wick films, addressed the possibility of Halle Berry reprising her role as Sofia, the character she played in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. While Berry didn’t appear in John Wick: Chapter 4, Stahelski teased that there have been talks to bring back Sofia, potentially as one of the “satellite projects” that are planned to be developed for the franchise. As Stahelski explains:
“Yeah. We have actually been in talks several times to try to… I hate the term spinoff. But they are trying to do other satellite projects off the Wick franchise. Hopefully they’ll be good ones.”
Halle Berry Has Teased a Sofia Spinoff
Last year, Berry herself teased a John Wick spinoff that would focus on Sofia. While confirming that she wasn’t involved with John Wick: Chapter 4, Berry teased that fans may still see the character again in a separate “thingy-thingy,” seemingly a spinoff solo project. As Berry told IGN:
“Sofia’s not in the next John Wick movie. There could possibly be a Sofia…her own movie. So she might not be in John Wick, but she might be doing her own thingy-thingy.”
Berry also said at the time that a Sofia spinoff would help put “some ointment on a little sore,” as she was previously set to lead an action movie spinoff that wound up getting canceled before production could start. After joining Pierce Brosnan in the James Bond movie Die Another Day, Berry was going to reprise her role as Jinx in a spinoff. She later told Variety about that canceled project in 2020:
“It was ahead of its time. Nobody was ready to sink that kind of money into a Black female action star. They just weren’t sure of its value. That’s where we were then.”
For now, fans can anticipate seeing Berry in the upcoming sci-fi adventure film The Mothership, heading to Netflix later this year. She will also be seen co-starring with Mark Wahlberg, J.K. Simmons, Jackie Earle Haley, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje in the upcoming thriller Our Man from Jersey, which is currently in production. It was recently reported that Berry and Angelina Jolie will star in th eaction movie Maude v Maude, and there are rumors she will return as Storm in Deadpool 3.
