Johnny Depp starred in three well-known star’s music videos – ‘It’s a gag!’

Between working on the legendary Disney franchise Pirates of the Caribbean, Johnny Depp has made quite the name for himself by being a guitarist and singer in the rock supergroup Hollywood Vampires. The band is made up of Depp, Alice Cooper, Joe Perry and Tommy Henriksen. But throughout the 2000s Depp started a strong relationship with a former member of The Beatles.

In 2013 Depp starred in the music video for Early Days, a song written and performed by Paul McCartney. The song is from his 2013 album New. And once he got started on a music video, he knew he had to get Depp involved.

McCartney said at the time: “I happened to ring Johnny Depp. I said: ‘Come along and we’ll sit around and jam with these blues guys.’ He said: ‘Yeah, OK, count me in, man.'” Macca added: “I knew it was an offer he couldn’t refuse!” (Via Rolling Stone)

This was not the first time the pair have teamed up, however.

Early Days was the third McCartney music video Depp had starred in. He had most recently appeared in 2012’s My Valentine. Before that, he made a quick cameo in 2013’s Queenie Eye. McCartney laughed: “It’s getting to be a running gag. He’s like the Alfred Hitchcock of my videos. And he’s good!”

Although Depp was almost instantly cast in the jam-session music video, the singer explained that he didn’t plan it in advance.

McCartney said: “No, I don’t think [acting] is my thing. I get self-conscious in front of a movie camera. Off-camera, I can impersonate, I can do this and that, and I’ll think: ‘I could be such a great actor.’ Then they say ‘action!’ and turn the camera on, and I go uh-uh-uh-uh-uh… I just don’t think I’m a natural.”

Despite these comments, he did go on to act alongside Depp in a Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

In 2017 McCartney appeared in the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film, Salazar’s Revenge. He played Uncle Jack, Jack Sparrow’s (Depp’s) uncle.

The Pirates of the Caribbean films are available on Disney Plus now.
