Johnny Marr has responded to Morrissey’s request that he stop talking about him in interviews, and he isn’t exactly holding out an olive branch.
The former The Smiths frontman penned an open letter to the ex-guitarist, asking him ‘politely’ to stop using his name as ‘clickbait’ because they ‘don’t know’ each other anymore.
Now Johnny has responded to Morrissey’s request – with a sarcastic reply on Twitter.
Tweeting Morrissey directly (no subtweeting here) Johnny wrote: ‘An ‘open letter’ hasn’t really been a thing since 1953, It’s all ‘social media’ now (Sic).
‘Even Donald J Trump had that one down.
He added: ‘Also, this fake news business…a bit 2021 yeah?’
Johnny finished his mocking reply with the hashtag #makingindiegreatagain, just in case the How Soon Is Now singer didn’t get the previous Donald Trump references.
The 58-year-old’s remarks come after Morrissey, 62, yesterday penned an open letter to his website asking him to ‘please stop mentioning my name in your interviews.
He suggested that Johnny instead focus on his ‘own career, your own unstoppable solo achievements and your own music’, and to ‘leave me out of it’.
The former chart-topper went on to say that Johnny simply doesn’t know him: ‘You know nothing of my life, my intentions, my thoughts, my feelings.
‘Yet you talk as if you were my personal psychiatrist with consistent and uninterrupted access to my instincts.’
He went on: ‘‘It’s as if you can’t uncross your own legs without mentioning me… Just stop using my name as click-bait.’
Bigmouth Strikes Again singer Morrissey argued that he has consistently ‘applauded [Johnny’s] genius’ throughout his solo career, but Johnny has ‘positioned yourself ever-ready as rent-a-quote whenever the press require an ugly slant on something I half-said.’
While once one of the most iconic British bands in the world, in recent years Morrissey is arguably better known for his controversial comments than his music.
And in a separate interview, he claimed that Harvey Weinstein’s alleged victims were ‘simply disappointed’.
Johnny has consistently said that he isn’t worried about Morrissey’s outbursts as he believes nothing can taint The Smith’s reputation, and the singer’s views don’t reflect that of the band.
‘Me and Morrissey were always very different people. It’s OK. You can’t change history,’ he wrote on Twitter in 2019.
The pair shared a long history together, touring the world as The Smiths and producing two albums that hit number one in the charts, but in recent years things have soured, to say the least.
