Jon Jones Super Bowl commercial was in poor taste considering his history of crimes against women.
On Sunday, during Super Bowl 57, viewers watching in the Las Vegas market were shown a commercial for the Dimopoulos Law firm featuring former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. Normally, using a sports figure in an ad would be no big deal, but when it comes to Jones, it’s a different story.
Jones has a history with the law, most recently in Las Vegas which makes him a spokesperson for a law firm a poor choice, to say the least.
Jon Jones has a history of violence against women
In September 2021 Jones was arrested just hours after his UFC Hall of Fame induction ceremony after police were called to respond to a potential domestic violence incident. According to police reports, Jones’ then-fiance was seen with blood on her asking for a room key after being locked out of her room with her daughters. She denied a request to call the police but one of the daughters she shares with Jones asked the front desk to call. After the arrest, police body cam footage was published that showed Jones headbutting a police car, and asking officers to kill him while he was being questioned. He was charged with misdemeanor battery domestic violence and felony injuring and tampering with a vehicle. The domestic violence charge was dropped in Dec. 2021 and Jones pleaded no contest to felony tampering with a police vehicle and was fined $750 and ordered to attend anger management classes.
Shortly after posting a photo of himself with his then-fiance Jessie Moses, he announced she had left him.
“My fiancée left me about two months ago, today she finalized that she won’t be coming back,” he tweeted.
That wasn’t the first legal issue Jones was wrapped up in.
In 2020, Jones was arrested after police heard gunshots and investigated. The officer found in his car with a “partially empty bottle of Recuerdo Mezcal as well as a black handgun underneath the driver’s seat.” He was arrested for a DWI having a BAC of more than double the legal limit. He later pleaded guilty to the DWI and accepted a plea to drop the negligent use of a firearm and driving with no proof of insurance charges. He was sentenced to four days of home arrest. The entire arrest was caught on police body cam footage.
In April 2019 Jones was charged with battery after an alleged incident with a cocktail waitress in a strip club in New Mexico. The alleged victim accused Jones of “slapping her, pulling her down to his lap and kissing her on the neck. She also alleged that Jones put her in a chokehold and picked her up and continued to touch her after she asked him to stop.” (h/t Sherdog). Jones pleaded no contest and received a 90-day deferred sentence for the incident.
In April 2015, Jones was stripped of his title after being involved in a hit-and-run accident that left a pregnant woman injured.
“Got a lot of soul searching to do. Sorry to everyone I’ve let down,” Jones said on social media at the time. He pleaded guilty to the charges and served just 18 months of supervised probation.
Before that, Jones was arrested for a DUI in May 2012.
These legal issues don’t include his USADA Performance Enhancing Drug violations or his history of verbal oubursts against women journalists such as myself and Izabelle Kostic who he blasted for asking about his PED use during a pre-fight press conference.
Neither Maxx Crosby nor William Karlsson, the other athletes featured in the commercial has criminal records that we are aware of.
We don’t know if Jones was/is a client of Dimopoulos Law.
FanSided reached out to Dimopoulos Law for comment and at press time has not received a response yet.
Jones will be returning to the Octagon for the first time in more than three years when he makes his heavyweight debut against Ciryl Gane for the vacant UFC heavyweight title in March.
