It was recently reported that Jonathan Majors (Lovecraft Country, Loki) was in talks with Lionsgate to play NBA legend Dennis Rodman in the upcoming movie 48 Hours in Vegas. Now, the actor is commenting on the news and explaining why he wanted to jump at that role. Speaking with Variety at the Newport Beach Film Festival, Majors said he’s intrigued by how Rodman is such a unique and “eclectic” person that, as an actor, he just can’t help but want to jump right into performing a character in that way.
“His character as a man is one that is unbridled. (One that asks,) ‘What is it to be free? To make your own choices, regardless of the impending consequences?’ I love that. And, you know, as an actor… He’s eclectic. He’s an open mind. He’s an open heart. And, selfishly, you want to play a role like that, because it’s gonna push you to that place. Jesse Brown teaches me things about my soul and spirit. I know Rodman’s going to too, and I’m just looking forward to getting into it.”
The name “Jesse Brown” refers to who Majors is playing in his newest movie, Devotion, which features the actor as the Navy’s first Black aviator. Majors is also set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his roles in the superhero sequels Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty following his debut in the TV series Loki. He will also have a major role as the antagonist in the boxing movie Creed III opposite Michael B. Jordan. New character posters for that movie were just released revealing our first look at Majors in the ring.
Dennis Rodman Is Involved With 48 Hours in Vegas
As for 48 Hours in Vegas, the movie is based on one particular weekend that occurred during the NBA Finals in 1998. At the time, Rodman had been playing with the Chicago Bulls, and needing a break from the court, the colorful-haired player told coach Phil Jackson that he needed to spend 48 days in Las Vegas, a request that was granted. The film will allow NBA fans to get a closer look into what life was like for Rodman, someone who was just as controversial as he was successful in the world of basketball.
Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Aditya Sood are producing the movie for Lord Miller. Rodman himself is also on board as an executive producer. At the time of the movie’s announcement, which was formally made last year, Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group President Nathan Kahane released the following statement.
“There’s only one Dennis Rodman. In 1998, there was nobody on Earth who’d be more fun – or maybe more dangerous – to party with. And yet that’s not even half of who he is. This movie takes you on an unforgettable ride with the myth, the legend, and also the man that Dennis is, behind everything you think you know. We could not be more thrilled to be working with Phil, Chris, Aditya, Ari, Will, and Jordan, and above all, Dennis, whose amazing career and life will make for an off-the-wall hilarious yet completely human and emotional movie. You think you know anything about ‘The Worm?’ Just you wait!”
48 Hours in Vegas does not yet have a premiere date.
